About the program
Strategic technologies like artificial intelligence, quantum computing and bioengineering are rapidly transforming national security and geopolitics. These technologies are neither inherently good, bad, nor neutral. They rely on humans to steer them in the right direction.
This is the mission of the Strategic Technologies Program. We explore the technology challenges and opportunities facing Australia, the United States and our network of allies and partners. We do this by conducting original research on the impact of strategic technologies for Australia and our region. We marshal experts from across government, industry and academia to collaborate on technology innovation and regulation. And we promote Australia’s sovereign capability to maximise the benefits of technology for security, productivity and democracy.
Areas of focus include:
- Global competition in artificial intelligence and associated supply chains.
- Technology diffusion in Australia and the Indo-Pacific.
- Dual-use technology development and acquisition, particularly in the context of AUKUS Pillar II and warfighting capabilities.
- The role and impact of export controls for technology transfer and development.
