The United States Studies Centre in conjunction with the Department of Government and International Relations and Centre for International Security Studies at the University of Sydney hosted a roundtable discussion with former war photographer for The New York Times and current researcher at the University of Copenhagen, Johan Spanner. Spanner discussed war photography and the US military.

Johan Spanner was a visitor at the US Studies Centre in 2015. Spanner is a photojournalist and political scientist, now at Images and International Security at the University of Copenhagen. He covers conflict and politics, and was one of the few photographers to keep covering Iraq during the sectarian violence. Spanner was part of the The New York Times' Baghdad Bureau effort that was a 2008 Pulitzer Prize finalist for International Reporting.
