USSC Associate Professor Dr David Smith talked to 6PR Radio in Perth about how the assassination attempt on Donald Trump may affect the election campaign.

"Unfortunately I don't think this is likely to be a healing moment ... because people are going to look at that and think it's us or them now," said Dr Smith.

"I would hope that [Trump] would try to calm things down."
