About the network

This is a network dedicated to the in-depth scholarly analysis of American right-wing politics and policies. The network brings together people who have published on the American right or who have completed doctoral research related to the American right.

The network is concerned with both theoretical questions related to, and the policy implications of, right-wing politics. The types of conceptual questions with which people in the network are engaged include: “what is conservatism?”; “what are the various branches of the American right?”; “what is the alt-right or what others call the New Right?”; “what are the differences between American conservatism and the far-right, and what are the overlaps?”; “in what ways is America both a follower and a leader of global far-right movements?”; and, “what are the overlaps between far-right politics and populism?”. In terms of more empirical research, colleagues in the network are interested in questions such as: “is Trumpism conservative?”; “how did Elon Musk become a leading figure in far-right politics?”; “how has the uneasy relationship between social conservatism and economic libertarianism long held together in American politics?”; “what have been the economic, social and international consequences of conservative policies from Reagan to the present?”; “how has the struggle between interventionist and non-interventionist elements of the American right played out and how has this impacted on US foreign policy-making?”; “is it racial politics, gender politics, economic aims, or nationalism that ultimately unites the American right?”; and “how important an element is Christian conservative politics to the American right?” .
