Trade and Investment

The Trade and Investment Program examines trends, challenges and opportunities in the trade and investment relationship between Australia and the United States. It places the Australian-US economic relationship in the broader context of Australia’s relations with the rest of the world and promotes public policy recommendations conducive to the growth and integration of the Australian, US and world economies.

Australia and the United States are indispensable economic partners. The United States is the single largest source of investment into Australia and the largest destination for Australian investment abroad. America not only supplies Australia with high-tech imports, but competes with Australia in export markets. Like every country in the global economy, Australia is affected by the state of the American domestic economy, America’s willingness to enforce existing commitments to international trade and investment agreements and its appetite for further trade liberalisation.
