Former US president Donald Trump’s popularity comes from his ability to “cut through all the static” surrounding American politics, says United States Studies Centre Non-resident Senior Fellow Stephen Loosely.

“He was once a New York City wrestling promoter and he knows how to get to the people who are going to take the tickets,” Mr Loosely told Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

“He’s got another good crowd in Iowa – Iowa being important in the Republican presidential primary calendar of course. “You do have a faithful turnout … but they’re not necessarily representative of American political opinion as a whole.”
