Biography

Michael E. Miller is a Non-Resident Fellow at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney. He is currently Pacific Editor at the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), one of the largest investigative journalism organisations in the world.

Before joining OCCRP, he was The Washington Post’s first Sydney bureau chief, covering two Australian elections, a constitutional referendum, a tent boxing competition and a mullet contest. He reported from almost every corner of Australia as well as a half-dozen countries in the region. He also covered conflict in Ukraine and Afghanistan for the newspaper. While at The Post, he wrote dozens of front-page features, many of them on immigration, including impactful series on the family separation crisis and so-called “migrant caravans” during the first Trump administration. He also covered the violent street gang MS-13, winning a Feddie Reporting Award from the National Press Foundation in 2017 for his work.

Prior to joining The Post, he won three Sigma Delta Chi awards for excellence from the Society of Professional Journalists while at The Miami New Times, an alt-weekly newspaper.

Miller holds a dual Master’s degree in journalism and Latin American studies from New York University and a Bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the University of Chicago.
