Cynthia Mehboob

Biography

Cynthia Mehboob is a doctoral scholar in the Department of International Relations at the Australian National University. Her research examines the complex interplay between human, non-human, and more-than-human elements in the securitisation
of Australia’s critical infrastructure, with a particular focus on the techno-politics of undersea cables in the Indo-Pacific. She is a 2024–2025 Women in the Alliance Fellow at the United States Studies
Centre, Sydney. Beyond academia, Cynthia actively contributes to public discourse on digital infrastructure and national security, with her analysis featured in The Interpreter (Lowy Institute), The Conversation, The Guardian Australia, NBC, Channel News Asia (CNA)
Nikkei Asia, Baird Maritime, The Maritime Executive, and the Samoa Observer. She has provided expert commentary on Australian radio and television, including ABC Australia and SBS News, and has
appeared on several podcasts discussing the geopolitical stakes of undersea cable networks in the Indo-Pacific.
