The Alumni Ambassador program seeks to provide a platform for the amazing work that our graduates undertake after completing their studies at the United States Studies Centre. The program is designed to promote our alumni, and encourage interaction within the alumni community and students who may be seeking mentorship in specific industry areas.

Ambassador of the Month: Matthew Cross

Matthew Cross

Matthew Cross studied a Master of US Studies with the United States Studies Centre from 2008 – 2010. Since then, he has been working in the Australian government, in advisory capacities to NSW premiers the Hon. Barry O’Farrell and the Hon. Mike Baird, and now works at the Property Council of Australia as a Government Relations Manager.


Alumni ambassadors

Sarah MacDonald

As a qualified solicitor, Sarah MacDonald has worked across various legal areas such as the District Court, Supreme Court and the Legal Aid Commission of NSW.

Sarah studied a Graduate Certificate in US Studies in 2016 to complement her work within the Australian Public Service.

She is particularly passionate about US politics and foreign policy, and also participated in the 2015 G’Day USA Tour of the United States.


Jake Nicol

Jake Nicol currently works as the Government and University Relations Officer, for the State Government’s urban transformation agency, UrbanGrowth NSW. Jake works closely with government stakeholders and academics from across NSW to build collaborative partnerships to improve the delivery of urban transformation projects.

Jake previously tutored in US politics and foreign policy at the US Studies Centre and interned for Congressman Eliot Engel, Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Whilst in Washington DC, he provided research and analysis on key international relationships and foreign policy developments, and assisted in preparation of briefing material for Democratic members of the Foreign Affairs Committee and their staff.

He is a member of Human Rights Watch Australia’s Outreach Committee and a project officer at Young Australians in International Affairs. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Socio-Legal Studies and Master’s Degree in US Studies from the US Studies Centre, where he focused on US politics and foreign policy.


Joshua Sprake

Joshua Sprake excelled in his undergraduate Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Arts, in which he majored in American Studies. By the time of graduation, Joshua had come first in two units of study, was the director of operations for the Students Representative Council, and the student fellow of the University’s Academic Board.

During his degree, Joshua participated in our Washington DC Placement Program, working for Congressman John Shimkus, providing policy advice around immigration policy, banking, finance law and insurance law.

Joshua currently works for the Commonwealth Bank’s CommInsure team as the General Insurance Product Specialist, where he won the Annual CBA CEO Award for Individual Excellence in Process Improvement.
