During his keynote speak at the first Republican midterm convention, US President Trump announced he would pay every American adult a $5,000 "Trump dividend" if the Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress after the November elections. The proposal immediately raised questions about whether the president could even deliver on such a promise, and where the money would come from.
USSC Director of Research Jared Mondschein spoke with Bloomberg on this announcement, saying it lacked the economic urgency or underpinning that helped secure congressional support for previous stimulus payments, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.
