Australia and the United States have agreed on a plan to boost military cooperation with Japan, as they look to counter China's influence in the Pacific.

The announcement comes after a meeting in Washington this morning, between Australia's ministers for Defence and Foreign Affairs, and their US counterparts.

The plan includes an invitation for Japan to participate in more joint defence exercises.
