In an interview for Sky News, USSC Foreign Policy and Defence Director Professor Peter Dean says the government’s allocation of $127 million over four years to help upskill Australians in defence is just the tip of the iceberg.

Professor Dean’s comments come as the government released in their 2023 federal budget they would be allocating $127 million over four years for 4,000 additional Commonwealth-supported places of higher education institutions to support the skilling requirements for AUKUS and nuclear-powered submarines.

“I think this will only be the start because as the DSR has pointed out, as the government before has even pointed out defence is having a bit of workforce crisis at the moment,” he told Sky News Australia.
