On November 7, 1944, incumbent Democratic President Franklin D. Roosevelt (FDR) defeated Republican Thomas E. Dewey to win an unprecedented fourth term of office.
FDR has been the only president in US history to win more than two consecutive elections, let alone four. This was before the passing of the 22nd Amendment in March 1947 that has since precluded anyone running for more than two terms.
