The Japan–Australia Dialogue and Exchange for the Next Generation program is a flagship initiative dedicated to strengthening Japan–Australia ties over the long term by building a network of emerging leaders across government, academia, industry and policy.

- Applicants must be citizens of Japan or Australia.
- Applicants must have a total of three or more years of work experience in relevant fields or be MPhil/ PhD candidates (or hold MPhil/PhD) in relevant fields.
- Japanese applicants must be available to attend the entire duration of the field trip in Australia, and Australian applicants must be available to attend the entire duration of the field trip in Japan.
- Applicants must be available to attend a full-day event in Sydney on 28 July 2026 and an afternoon event in Tokyo on 30 October 2026.
- Applicants who are currently employed by governmental organisations must submit written permission from their managers to apply for this fellowship program. The fellows are expected to publish two papers during the program.

1. Cover letter
Your cover letter should include:
- your nationality
- your research interests and how you would include Japan and Australia in your research
- why you think the Japan-Australia relation is important
- your research topic for this fellowship program.
2. Curriculum vitae
Please include at least two reference contacts in the CV.
3. Writing sample
Applicants are expected to submit a writing sample of approximately 1,500 words in length. Writing samples will be used for selection purposes only. Applicants do not need to produce new writing for the application.
4. Supporting documentation (if applicable)
Applicants who are currently employed by governmental organisations must submit written permission from their managers. Written permission can be a PDF copy of your email correspondence with your manager or a simple permission letter with your manager’s signature.

The core theme for 2026 is Australia-Japan relations at 50 years since the NARA treaty – What are the challenges and opportunities for elevating the bilateral relations?

Japanese participants
Fellows will travel to Sydney, Canberra and Cowra from 26 July to 31 July 2026.
Australian participants
Fellows will travel to Tokyo from 25 October to 30 October 2026.
Australia-Japan Symposium
Both Japanese and Australian fellows will participate in an event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Basic Treaty of Friendship and Co-operation in Sydney on 28 July 2026.
Costs
Fellows’ transport, accommodation and meal costs will be covered.
