USSC Associate Professor Dr David Smith talks to ABC Drive about Donald Trump stating his support for abortion policy remaining a state responsibility. Dr Smith describes this position as “the most politically sensible decision that Trump could have made.”
This policy was informed primarily by the unpopularity of a national abortion ban, with Dr Smith noting that Trump “was almost saying out loud [that winning elections] was the reason why he wouldn’t support a national ban.” Dr Smith does not predict that opposition to this policy from activists of a national ban will hurt Trump at the general election: “Anti-abortion groups are going to support him no matter what.”
