Director of Foreign Policy and Defence Professor Peter Dean is quoted in this article for The Australian after the tragic deaths of three US marines training off the coast of Darwin.

Professor Dean says "Increased US military presence in Australia is a key element of enhancing deterrence in the region and making sure that Australia works with allies and partners to maintain a regional military balance for peace and security." He added "All military operations, especially high-end military exercises, carry risk – but deterrence has to be backed by credibility at both the political and operational levels."
