Biography

Kazutoshi Suzuki is a Visiting Scholar at the United States Studies Centre and Professor at Sophia University Tokyo. He earned his PhD in International Relations from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Tokyo. His research interests centre on international negotiation, globalisation, and theory building using multi-agent simulation.

He is a recipient of the Ohira Memorial Prize for his work, The Political Process of the US-Japan Structural Impediments Initiative (Nichibei Kouzou Kyougi no Seiji Katei, Minerva Shobo, 2013).

His recent works include “Multilateralism and Discrimination in GATT Round Negotiations” (SIIR Working Paper, No.5, October 17, 2023) and “Structuring International Negotiation with Tactics: A Proactive Turn in Japanese FTA Policy” (SIIR Working Paper, No.7, November 19, 2023).

He is currently developing computational models to quantify the bargaining power of nations based on their interdependencies, and evaluating the impact of recent trade policies such as decoupling, friend-shoring, reshoring, and reciprocal tariffs.
