Thomas Barlow is Australia's leading research strategist. He provides independent policy advice to governments and strategic advice to high-tech companies, universities, and research organisations. Highly regarded in Australia for his independence and imagination, he is the author of an influential book about Australian innovation, The Australian Miracle, published by Picador. He also produces a major study on The State of Research in Australian Universities. Dr Barlow is on the advisory board of two Australian companies, of two leading university research departments, and of a federal government research agency. Between 2002 and 2004 he was the Science Advisor to Dr Brendan Nelson, then the Minister for Education, Science and Training in the Australian Government. A former biomedical research fellow at Oxford University and MIT, Dr Barlow is by training a theoretical and computational chemist with a background in protein research.
