Isha Desai

Isha Desai is a research intern at the United States Studies Centre.

    What is your educational background?

I am a second-year student at the University of Sydney studying a Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Advanced Studies (Politics and International Relations) with a major in political economy. I am specifically interested in policymaking, focusing on public and foreign policy and hope to work in this field during my career.

What have you been working on in your time here at the USSC?

I have been working closely with Research Associates Victoria Cooper and Sarah Hamilton where I have assisted their research on COVAX diplomacy, President Biden’s geoeconomic industry policy and infrastructure plan. In particular, I have enjoyed being able to witness the USSC’s celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the ANZUS alliance, where they hosted a webinar with former Prime Ministers Julia Gillard and John Howard. I’ve enjoyed researching a range of contemporary issues and having the opportunity to provide my feedback to Victoria and Sarah on their current research.

What do you hope to do with your experience from the USSC?

This internship has provided me with invaluable practical policy experience as well as insights into professional life at a research centre and policy think tank. Following the internship, I hope to keep working with policy institutes and developing my analytical writing ability whilst I finish my undergraduate degree. In the future, I would like to pursue postgraduate studies in a policy field or work in a social impact policy role with the Australian Public Service/private sector.
