Do you want to gain a better understanding of Australia-US relations? Advance your career prospects? Then spend your summer interning at the US Consulate in Sydney.
Gain invaluable real-world experience
The US Consulate General Sydney is looking for University of Sydney students to experience working alongside the Consulate’s American and Australian employees in the areas of economic/political, commercial, media, and management over the 2019 Australian summer holidays.
In partnership with the US Consulate General Sydney, the United States Studies Centre offers its students an exclusive opportunity to intern at the Consulate in the summer break.
The professional placement program gives students unprecedented access to work on issues concerning Australia-US relations. This program not only provides students with real-world experience but will also count as six credit points towards their degree.
The internship runs from 2 January - 8 February 2019. Selected students are required by the US Consulate to enrol in the six-credit point internship unit, USSC3703 US Studies Internship (or postgraduate equivalent). The unit has been designed to provide academic support for students to discuss and refine research approaches and questions arising from the placement. Assessment includes a research proposal, presentation and final research essay based on the internship experience.
Postgraduate students enrolled at the University of Sydney are also required to receive credit for the internship and there are a couple of options available. Please speak with the postgraduate coordinator to discuss what will work best for you.
This unit can be counted towards the American Studies major or as an elective unit. All students are responsible for checking their degree progression to make sure they can enrol. Students will not be considered for the internship if they do not have room in their degree to take the internship unit.
The program is open to University of Sydney postgraduate or undergraduate students who are non-US citizens. Students must have also completed any AMST or USSC unit. Applicants must also meet the following criteria:
Please note that the US Consulate will not be taking interns in 2020. Applications for 2021 will open in mid-2020.
