FORMER Victorian premier John Brumby has been appointed a director of the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.

The centre's board chairman, Malcolm Binks, said on Wednesday that Mr Brumby would be an asset to the board with his depth of experience in public life.

The centre's Chief Executive Officer Bates Gill said Mr Brumby, who was Victorian premier from 2007 to 2010, was well versed in higher education, including holding a board position at the University of Melbourne's faculty of business and economics.

He is also on a joint appointment as a Vice Chancellor's Professorial Fellow at Melbourne and Monash universities. Since retiring from politics, Mr Brumby has also become chairman of the MTAA Superannuation Fund, the chairman of Trustees of the Joe Welch Bursary Trust and a board member of the Fred Hollows Foundation.
