This week's edition of The 45th newsletter.

After a week of questioning the judgement of Attorney-General Jeff Sessions, President Donald Trump has stepped up his attacks on the cabinet secretary – who he himself appointed – with a tweet overnight describing him as "very weak".

On Monday the president asked why the "beleaguered" attorney-general wasn't looking into Hillary Clinton's "crimes" and "Russian relations". Last week he openly told The New York Times that he regretted appointing Sessions to his post.

The escalating and humiliating criticism – which stems from Sessions' decision to recuse himself from the investigation into Russian meddling in the US election – risks opening a rift with conservatives who see the attorney-general as their champion.

Trump has made no effort to dispel the impression that he wants Sessions out, telling reporters Tuesday that “we will see what happens” and “time will tell”.
