US Senator John McCain addressed an audience of more than 500 people at the NSW State Library in Sydney overnight, calling for Australia to sustain its alliance with the United States under President Donald Trump.
Former Australian prime ministers Bob Hawke and John Howard joined government and business leaders at the event to hear the US Senate Armed Services Committee chairman's speech, which acknowledged the uncertainty and unease from allies regarding the Trump presidency, but also reminded that "the new administration is just that – new".
Senator McCain also addressed regional security in the Asia-Pacific, trade and economic challenges in his wide-ranging Alliance 21 Lecture.
