This week's edition of The 45th newsletter.

"Truly a momentous development" was how one US media commentator described the staggering email thread released by President Trump's eldest son, Donald Jr., appearing to show his willingness to accept Russian assistance to damage Hillary Clinton during the 2016 US presidential election campaign.

The full thread – posted by Trump Jr. to Twitter in an effort to pre-empt another story by The New York Times – shows publicist Rob Goldstone clearly stating that a prosecutor in Russia was offering to give the Trump campaign incriminating information on Clinton “as part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump”. Trump Jr. responded to Goldstone: “If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”

The emails will make it considerably difficult for the Trump administration, and former campaign officials, to continue to plausibly deny any knowledge of attempts by Russia to influence the election in Trump's favour. At the time of writing, President Trump had made no comment – on Twitter or otherwise – about the latest revelations.
