This week's edition of The 45th newsletter.
Welcome back to another year of The 45th – though there was little respite from the Trump-cycle over the festive season. That was thanks mostly to Michael Wolff's sensational look at the inner workings of the White House in his book Fire and Fury, the fallout of which continues to have repercussions for the president's former chief strategist Steve Bannon.
It was announced overnight that Bannon is stepping down as chairman of Breitbart News after a public spat with the president over his comments in the book. Bannon described a June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower in New York between Donald Trump Jr, Jared Kushner, Paul Manafort and a Russian lawyer (where dirt on Hillary Clinton was promised) as "treasonous" and "unpatriotic".
In a statement last week, Trump said: “Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.” He later dubbed Bannon “Sloppy Steve” in a series of tweets.
Meanwhile, despite claims of inaccuracies and complaints about journalistic integrity, Fire and Fury continues to top bestseller lists across the United States (including Amazon), and its publisher is rushing to print more copies.
