In an interview on ABC's Afternoon Briefing with Patricia Karvelas, United States Studies Centre Senior Fellow Dr Charles Edel discussed President Trump's decision to suspend funding for the World Health Organization (WHO), China's move to exert more control in international institutions, and how Taiwan is excelling at flattening the curve amid the COVID-19 response.
Dr Edel said President Trump's decision to cut funding to the WHO came at no surprise, however, the "context is critical".
"This comes in the midst of rising criticism domestically of how Trump has handled the crisis and sinking poll numbers," Dr Edel said. "That’s when you’re seeing a move to deflect and to push the blame onto the WHO."
