Democrat Jon Ossoff’s narrow loss in the Georgia House special election overnight will be seen as a crushing emotional blow to Democrats, who need to take traditional Republican districts (like Georgia's 6th) in next year's Midterm Elections if they have any hope of wresting back control of the US House of Representatives.

The Associated Press called the election for Republican Karen Handel shortly before midnight, with 81 per cent of the precincts reporting and Handel holding a 11,000-vote lead over Ossoff.

The high-stakes special election was the most expensive US House race on record.
