The colourful former American presidential candidate Ross Perot has died at the age of 89. The self-made billionaire from Texas ran for president as a third party candidate twice in the 90s, swinging some of the highest numbers of votes for an independent in the last century. Something of a harbinger of the current president, Perot was a socially conservative maverick who campaigned against the political status quo. USSC senior lecturer David Smith is quoted in this report on ABC Radio's The World Today.
