The Australian's national chief-of-staff, David King, has been selected for the 2012 US Studies Centre World Press Institute media fellowship.
King is one of 10 journalists from across the world who will travel to the US and spend two months immersed in politics, business, culture and media.
The chief executive of the US Studies Centre at the University of Sydney, Professor Geoffrey Garrett, said: "David King is already very talented in his field and the fellowship will provide an invaluable opportunity for him to further enrich his understanding of American institutions and culture, while meeting and working alongside journalists from around the globe."
