The US Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has said that America will expand its military presence across Asia and the Pacific and strengthen ties with its traditional allies, Robert Kaplan, says that the South China Sea is a new arena for regional rivalry as China want to see the disappearance of the US military in the region. Robert Kaplan is the National Correspondent for The Atlantic Monthly and Senior Fellow at the Centre for a New American Security; he is also a speaker at the US Studies Centre 2011 National Summit on the 9/11 decade.

Robert Kaplan was a speaker at the US Studies Centre's National Summit in June 2011. Kaplan is the bestselling author of seventeen books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages, including Earning the Rockies, In Europe's Shadow, Asia’s Cauldron, The Revenge of Geography, Monsoon, The Coming Anarchy, and Balkan Ghosts. He is a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security and a senior advisor at Eurasia Group. For three decades his work has appeared in The Atlantic. He held the national security chair at the United States Naval Academy and was a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Policy Board. Foreign Policy magazine twice named him one of the world’s "Top 100 Global Thinkers."
