The oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico is the third major disaster in the Gulf and Caribbean, after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and the earthquake in Haiti. Edward Blakely, one of the world's leading experts in disaster management, says the national and international responses to these three disasters has been slow, shallow and lacking the proper people and equipment to do the job. Edward Blakely is an honorary professor in Urban Policy at the US Studies Centre.
