Senior Fellow of the US Studies Centre Bruce Wolpe says there is a “long game ahead” and there is a “good first quarter for the Democrats” after they took back the state of Virginia and defeated a Republican governor in Kentucky.

“They feel they are cutting through and building on the factors that led to the Democrats taking back the house of representatives last year,” he told Sky News on Thursday.

“The trends are in the suburbs around the cities, the Democrats are taking the cities, as multi-cultural cities vote Democratic but they are taking the suburbs around the cities and that’s where the changes in votes are occurring.

“Who’s winning are moderate Democrats who appeal to more than just the Trump base.”
