AUSMIN convenes as US readies return to Iraq

The US secretaries of state and defense have arrived in Australia for the annual AUSMIN talks soon after President Barack Obama announced air strikes in Iraq. Adjunct professor Russell Trood examines how the Middle East security situation will play into the ministerial consultations.

Russell Trood (1948-2017) was Adjunct Professor in the Defence and Security Program at the US Studies Centre and Professor of International Relations at Griffith University. He was also President of the United Nations Association of Australia and completed an appointment as the Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Australia for Eastern Europe. Prior to these appointments, Trood was a Liberal Senator for Queensland in the Australian Parliament.
Before his election to the Senate in 2004, Trood was Director of the Centre for the Study of Australia-Asia Relations and a Visiting Fellow at the Lowy Institute for International Policy. Trood was a member of the Council of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute, the Foreign Affairs Council and the Board of the Australian Indonesia Institute.
