Senator Arthur Sinodinos has signalled defiance in two conflicting directions in his most extensive comments since being appointed ambassador to the United States.
Speaking at the United States Studies Centre in Sydney University, the ambassador-designate invoked the 9/11 terror attacks as a defining event in the "psyche" of prime minister John Howard, to whom he was chief of staff.
