Polling released on Thursday night by the United States Studies Centre showed 60 per cent of Australians supported same-sex marriage but 43 per cent also believed private businesses should have the right to refuse to provide services to gay weddings. The Australian Financial Review reports that members of parliament are drafting an alternative bill that would legalise same-sex marriage while offering more protection for religious organisations.

The opinion surveys were conducted by YouGov PLC as part of an ongoing partnership between USSC and YouGov.
